Charlie George’s simple but powerful design is based on a photograph of the young Swedish environmental activist, Greta Thunberg, set against a plain ground. She points a finger at the viewer in the manner of Lord Kitchener, the British Secretary of State for War, in the iconic 1914 enlistment poster by Alfred Leete that featured the message “Britons Lord Kitchener Wants You to Join Your Country’s Army.” Instead, Thunberg declares “Your Planet Needs You.” She thus addresses not only the young audiences that have so widely supported the cause but also older generations who are more likely to be familiar with the World War I poster and its message. This poster was carried on placards during the global climate protests of September 2019.
