The Hillyer Institute was founded as the Education Department of the Young Men’s Christian Association (Y.M.C.A.) in Hartford, Connecticut in 1892. (In 1957, it became one of three colleges to form the University of Hartford.) The quote here from Proverbs 15:14 reflects the organization’s Christian mission. However, the institute’s programs were chiefly designed to serve the young men who came to the city seeking work and this rather rudimentary poster promotes its evening classes in such practical subjects as mechanical drawing, bookkeeping and penmanship, stenography, and fist aid.
