André Galland’s poster promotes a gymnastics competition held in southeastern France in July 1928, a few weeks before the Olympics in Amsterdam. This bold Art Deco design, emphasizing the curved form of the figure on the parallel bars, the tones of his flesh melding with those of the sky and water in the spherical view behind him, appears almost entirely decorative, reflecting the artist’s formal training in both the fine and decorative arts. (In addition to posters, lithographs, and illustrations for journals, he made faience or colorful glazed-earthenware objects, many of which survive in French collections.) His posters promoted subjects as diverse as travel, anti-Communism, wine, Armagnac, and fertilizer made of fish guano.
