This poster is from the hugely ambitious Democratic presidential campaign of 1960 that Richard Nixon, seen in the unflattering photograph here, lost to John F. Kennedy in the closest election of the 20th century. The campaign is best remembered for the first of four televised debates between the two candidates; the pale, sweaty Nixon did not fare well against the telegenic, charming Kennedy, who used the opportunity to speak directly to the American people. The tagline here, suggesting the candidate’s inherent sleaziness, refers to the fact that early in his role as vice-president to the existing president, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Nixon had been charged with financial improprieties.
