In this vivid design, with a snarling wolf surrounded by shotgun cartridges in red on a black ground, Hohlwein brilliantly plays on both the name of the company and on the on the potential for physical damage embodied by both the beast and the products promoted here: gunpowder and other explosives and compounds as well as shotgun cartridges. Wolff & Co. had been founded in Walsrode in northwestern Germany in 1815. In 1912, the year that Hohlwein made this poster, the firm modernized its manufacturing plant, replacing steam power with electrical power.
