As a leading social activist, artist Ben Shahn was hired in 1943 as chief designer of the Graphic Division of the newly formed Political Action Committee (PAC) of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO), a federation of labor unions. Among the posters he and his team produced for the organization was a series in support of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidential reelection campaign in 1944. This poster, published in 1946, the last year in which Shahn worked for the CIO, urges people to vote for the kinds of social-justice reforms Roosevelt had championed before his death in April 1945, and for the peaceful world necessary to them. A child with hand outstretched begs for the viewer’s vote in his favor.
