This simple composition with integrated text is based on one designed and produced by the Atelier Populaire, a group of artists and art students who occupied the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris during a period of wildcat strikes in the city beginning in May 1968. That poster had an almost identical design but read: “Le Vote Ne Change Rien/La Lutte Continue” (Voting Changes Nothing/The Struggle Continues). The appropriation of this scrappy protest image by the Interference Archive in Brooklyn reflects the organization’s mission to collect and house materials created as part of social-justice movements, including posters, publications, buttons, and flyers. It is one of many designs based on images from the May 1968 protests that were printed at the Interference Archive’s May Day Propaganda Party in 2018. Each poster is unique; they were printed on the spot in various colors and handed out for free at the event.
