This World War I poster urging Czech citizens to subscribe to the fifth war loan was issued in variants with different lettering (sometimes in German) intended to appeal to citizens of the various countries under the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The image occupying the upper half of the composition shows a medieval Austrian knight standing on a fallen red flag, his sword raised above his head. A Hapsburg flag is planted in the ground immediately behind him. The little-known Czech artist Hanuš Svoboda produced a number of war-loan posters during this period, six of which, including this one, are held in the collection of the Imperial War Museum in London. Melantrich in Prague was also the printer for many war-loan posters by Svoboda and other artists.
