This poster advertises the West German release of the 1960 American film Wake Me When It’s Over (the German title translates as “Unshaven and Far from Home”). The humorous, colorful image evokes both the comic nature of the story here and the remote island military base near Shima, Japan, where the protagonist, a World War II veteran, finds himself after being mistakenly forced to return to military service. It is one of numerous film posters created by German graphic designer Klaus Dill after World War II. Dill got his start as a painter of posters advertising American Westerns for German audiences, as well as book covers. He went on to produce any number of posters advertising other films, mainly American, and typically in the lurid and melodramatic style that was especially popular in the 1950s.
