This another one of many well-known posters for Amer Picon commissioned by the company during the 1920s and ‘30s.The composition by Swiss graphic designer Noël Fontanet reflects its efforts to increase sales during the winter sports season by promoting (and even providing a recipe for) a hot drink made with the bitters. In 1936, Amer Picon even sponsored a scientific expedition to the Himalayas under the patronage of the French Alpine Club. Dr. Arlaud, the expedition’s chief medical officer, wrote: “We have started drinking Picon in Camp 1 at an altitude of 5,200m… I made hot Picons for everyone according to your recipe. The effect was remarkable; not only did everyone feel revitalized, but it was also so pleasant that immediately the sceptics became followers and I had to ration it!” Fontanet was one of the leading graphic designers in Geneva, hugely influenced by the elegant, streamlined forms of French Art Deco. He produced some five hundred posters, mainly between the wars; in addition to designs like this one promoting commercial products, he created images for restaurants, sporting, and cultural events as well as for radical right-wing organizations in Switzerland.
