Saul Mandel went into commercial advertising in the 1950s and produced designs for numerous companies and products in the subsequent decades. He remains best known for his design of the Jolly Green Giant for Green Giant canned foods, the Puppy Love stamps for the U.S. Postal Service, and his posters for the Incredible, Edible Egg campaign. In this poster promoting TWA’s direct service to Paris, a green-suited man, apparently flying on his own steam and carrying a TWA travel bag, is greeted with a bouquet of flowers by a Frenchman (identifiable by the beret, of course) as he leans out from the Eiffel Tower. It also includes a very familiar French word. While the posters in this series trade on the most obvious stereotypes, they also reflect Mandel’s characteristically, colorful, humorous, and almost childlike illustrational style.
