This enlistment poster is one of numerous posters Herbert Paus designed for federal government agencies during World War I. In this slightly confused illustration, he shows a U.S. soldier surveying a large globe surmounted by a small figure of Victory; the soldier’s form, like those of the figures behind him representing character, crafts, and physique also suggests a certain classical formality; the figure representing “character,” however, is clothed in the gothic chainmail of a medieval Christian knight.
