For Pushpin Studio’s 40th anniversary in 1995, Chwast designed a poster that encapsulates some of the company’s most characteristic stylistic innovations. The design is at once literal (there are 40 hands, one for each year of the studio’s operation) and witty (the disembodied hands, each holding a number between 1 and 40, create a curious pattern), evocative of vintage draftsmanship (the individual hands suggest those in historic drawing books) and presented in an unusual and eye-catching combination of pastel colors.
