As a resident of Sag Harbor and a known artist, James McMullan was asked to produce a poster for the Hampton Library’s annual appeal. He made at least four designs for the library, each of which was displayed around town, within the library itself, and sold to benefit the institution. This was his first poster for the library and shows his wife relaxing on the grass with a book. In the 1989 image, his daughter is reading on their porch. These images were so beloved and familiar in the town that once, during a local parade, one of the floats featured people posing in costume as the figures in McMullan’s posters.
