This design for The Front Page grew from a moment Jim McMullan imagined while reading the play: the tough-talking journalist barking the details of a criminal case into a phone. This was McMullan’s second composition for Lincoln Center Theater, and stands apart from other images in his oeuvre because of the heavy black ink that defines the figure. Some of the lettering in the lower register was created with a round-tipped Speedball calligraphy pen—a vintage production technique that would have been popular during the period presented in the play.
