Barbara Loveland joined the graphic design department at Herman Miller in 1977, one of a handful of female graphic designers at the famous modern furniture company. The poster promotes the firm’s range of revolutionary ergonomic Ergon chairs, the first of which had been introduced at Herman Miller by designer Bill Stumpf in 1976 after ten years of research into how people sit when they work. The poster’s title and the speech bubbles next to many of the chairs suggest that Loveland sought to “domesticate” this technologically advanced office furniture and make it less intimidating to the consumer.
