When designer Dawn Baillie was assigned by her new employer, Dazu, to create this image, her instructions were to lean into the fact that the movie’s star, Andrew Dice Clay, was a comedian who specialized in being offensive. Her idea, therefore, was to have a copywriter create a giant disclaimer listing all the people who would be insulted by the film. This version of the poster was ultimately removed from circulation. It is rare that a poster gets this far into the production process, with everything approved and printed, only to be withdrawn. However, one small aspect of the design forced the studio to order that all copies be destroyed. Months before this poster was due to be released, Mick Haggerty—one of Dawn’s professors in college—designed the teaser poster, the logo from which is incorporated in this design. It is fairly common for the logo—the decorative typographic treatment of the title of the film— to be transferred from a teaser poster to a payoff poster and to additional film-marketing materials. The design that replaced this poster incorporated elements from the teaser in a more neutral image.
