Stop Kiss opened in the Shiva Theater, the smallest of the Public Theater’s auditoriums, in December 1998, and it was so successful that its run was extended three times. Jessica Hecht and Sandra Oh starred as two young women navigating contemporary New York and their own evolving sexual identities. Paula Scher’s two-part design for the poster suggests the grittiness, romance, and sexual drama of the play; Ben Brantley described it similarly in his New York Times review: “Manhattan growls like an underfed pit-bull in “Stop Kiss,” a sweet, sad and enchantingly sincere play by the young American writer Diana Son.”
