The gleaming metallic letters against a graduated gray-to-blue ground in Scher’s minimalist design for Tina Landau’s play Space suggest both the infinite emptiness of space and the futuristic vessels that have transported human beings there. The play opened in the Public Theater’s Martinson Hall in December 1999 after productions in Chicago and Los Angeles; it explores the personal and professional consequences when a distinguished neuropsychiatrist begins to take seriously his patients’ claims that they have been abducted by aliens.
