Designer Antonio Pérez González, commonly known as Ňiko, is one of the masters of Latin American graphic design. He began producing posters for the Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos (ICAIC) in 1968 and was among a group of artists who fostered a renaissance in Cuban poster art following Fidel Castro’s revolution of 1959. He designed both political and movie posters, typically incorporating Cuban and foreign elements. This poster, designed in 1971 but issued in 1974, includes Castro’s famous slogan “If I set out, I arrive…If I arrive, I enter…If I enter, I triumph.” While its bold image of a boat floating on the sea celebrates the victory of Cuban Communism, it also appears to have been inspired by foreign artistic styles of the time, not least the colorful psychedelia of The Beatles animated film Yellow Submarine of 1968.
