In this bilingual political poster, graphic artist Andrew Zermeño’s cartoon sketch shows President Richard Nixon trampling La Raza (the race), a term used for people of Mexican and Chicano background, in a barrel as if they were grapes. The image relates to Nixon’s denunciation of the California grape boycott organized by Cesar Chavez’s United Farm Workers Union during his 1968 campaign for the presidency. With a composition in which image and message are closely linked, the poster urges farm workers to stand up for their rights. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Zermeño created political cartoons for the union’ s newspaper, El Malcriado, as well as other posters and a calendar in support of the cause.
