Saul Steinberg’s poster design for a series of concerts by the Baroque Orchestra of the Saint Louis Symphony is based closely on the scrappy original proof for the work, now held in the collection of the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington University in Saint Louis. Steinberg created the proof using colored pencil, pencil, crayon, and rubber stamps on cut and torn sheet music, collaged using staples and masking tape. The irreverent informality of the final poster, an off-set lithograph, is an unusual choice to promote a formal program of classical music; it is also characteristic of the numerous witty, cerebral drawings made by Steinberg for the New Yorker magazine between the 1940s and his death in 1999 for which he remains best known.
