Ludwig Hohlwein’s travel poster promoting Regensburg in Bavaria in southeastern Germany is actually dominated by a building in the nearby town of Kelheim, the neoclassical Befreiungshalle (Hall of Freedom), commissioned by Ludwig I of Bavaria to commemorate the victory over Napoleon in the Wars of Liberation between 1813 and 1815. Here, the structure, completed in 1863, towers over the ancient city of Regensburg and the spires of its cathedral. This was one of many of Hohlwein’s many advertising posters printed by Hermann Sonntag & Co. of Munich. Hohlwein even produced a promotional poster for the firm in 1924 with the slogan “Gute Drucke bei Herm. Sonntag & Co. Münich” (Good prints at Hermann Sonntag & Co., Munich). Like Hohlwein himself, the firm went on to produce posters for various government agencies during the Nazi regime.
