This poster promotes a Christmas exhibition of dolls and toys at a museum in Frankfurt, West Germany. The show spanned 300 years and featured objects by more than 50 manufacturers; it included mechanical vehicles, tin figurines, stuffed dolls, and other rare items from the museum’s permanent collection. In addition to collecting circus and fairground material, designer Günther Kieser amassed a large collection of children’s toys, making the subject of this exhibition particularly well suited to him as an artist. Here, he combines illustrated and photographic images of toys, many of which were likely from his own collection rather than the museum’s. Kieser also designed the accompanying pamphlets for the show, all of which feature a combination of the toy motifs seen in this poster.
