The publication of this poster by the Yunnan Provincial Environmental Protection Monitoring Station coincided with the establishment of the Ecological Impact Assessment (EcolA), a series of laws and implementation strategies that formed the basis of an environmental legislative framework in China. Its aim was to identify and predict how human activities impact the environment. The EcolA was first introduced in the major River Basin provinces. Yunnan is China’s most ecologically diverse province, and the richest in freshwater, but is also heavily mined for aluminum, lead, zinc, copper, and nickel—the extraction of which relies on toxic materials that, if improperly used, can affect the water table. Today, the Mekong River, which flows through Yunnan, is designated as one of the World Wildlife Fund’s top 20 “Priority Places” for conservation due to its vast biodiversity and high risk for destruction due to rapid development.
