The Long Island Railroad—a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Railroad—built a new World’s Fair station along its existing tracks in Flushing, Queens. The ultra-modern station, which reflected “The World of Tomorrow” theme, can be seen here in the distance by the Trylon and Perisphere. The foreground of the composition shows the original Pennsylvania Station next to a stylized version of the Manhattan skyline. The train tracks cutting through the city emphasize the “Direct Route” from Midtown to the fair, a tagline that was included in all advertising for the event. These rides were also promoted as costing only ten cents for the ten-minute journey. Sascha Maurer was a prominent graphic designer who worked for several major East Coast railroad companies, among them the New York Central Line, the Pennsylvania Railroad, and the New Haven Railroad. This is one of three images he created for the 1939 New York World’s Fair.
