This poster was designed by Chwast for the Shoshin Society, an organization of American and Japanese designers committed to nuclear disarmament and world peace. This poster was probably intended for the society’s 1985 exhibition Images for Survival, showing peace posters by Japanese and American artists; it commemorated the 40th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and opened at the Hiroshima Museum of Modern Art before traveling to the United States. In this slightly sinister image (reminiscent of 19th-century children’s book illustration), Chwast shows a child, his pointy clown hat forming the “A” of “PEACE” as he plays idly with the globe. It’s a chilling reminder of the fragility of the earth and the vulnerability of its inhabitants.
