Heiniger was a pioneer of the avant-garde Swiss New Photography movement of the 1930s. He later became a documentary filmmaker for Disney. He soon began to collaborate with graphic designers like Josef Muller-Brockmann to create innovative photo books as well as posters like this one for one of Swiss Telecom’s major advertising campaigns, intended to broaden the popular appeal of the telephone. In this bold design with a limited color palette, the large lettering is hand-drawn while the telephone handset and the face are separate photographs, superimposed using photomontage.
