This poster was issued by the United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation, also known as the Emergency Fleet Corporation or EFC, established by the federal government on April 16, 1917, just ten days after the United States entered World War I. The EFC was intended to organize the emergency construction and operation of merchant ships to transport troops and military supplies to Europe and the poster was meant to encourage the efforts of shipyard workers. Given that it was issued by the Publications Section of the EFC in Philadelphia, it is likely that the image shows nearby Hog Island, the largest shipyard in the world at the time. There, American workers built steel ships using new mass-construction methods, assembling identical vessels from prefabricated parts. This seems to be one of very few posters illustrated by the Norwegian-born painter Jonas Lie, better known for his coastal views of New England and New York City scenes in which he infused elements of both French Impressionism and New York’s Ashcan School.
