In 1968, “Nixon’s The One!” was the slogan for Republican candidate Richard Nixon’s second presidential campaign, and it appeared on posters and bumper stickers all over America. The relaxed, smiling figure at his desk here is presumably intended to contrast with the sallow-looking, ill-at-ease Nixon who had been defeated by the young, dynamic John F. Kennedy in 1960 after the first televised presidential debates in U.S. history. In 1968, however, Nixon successfully defeated Democrat Hubert Humphrey.
