Milton Glaser, who died in 2020, was among the greatest American graphic designers. He probably remains best known for his I ♡ New York logo and his 1967 psychedelic poster promoting Bob Dylan’s “Greatest Hits” record. This poster was one of several that Glaser created for the Newport Jazz Festival. He also produced designs for numerous other jazz festivals across America, including New Orleans, San Diego, and Cooperstown. Here, with bold colors and sinuous lines, he describes the figure of a standing singer fused with that of a saxophonist who forms part of her long skirt; they stand on a red stage framed by an elaborately tasseled curtain and with a painted landscape in the background. Glaser’s composition effectively suggests the energy and vibrancy of the festival itself.
