In 1953, Otl Aicher had cofounded and then taught at the Ulm School of Design, one of Germany’s leading centers for design education. In his role as leader of the design team for the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, he created the logo for the event, a series of pictograms to make navigation of the Olympic Village easy for athletes and visitors of many nations, and 21 posters advertising the various sports at the games. (His team also designed the first official mascot in the history of the summer Olympics, a multicolored dachshund called Waldi). Like the others in the series, this design for the fencing section incorporates the official logo of the Olympics, a blue solar motif known as “Bright Sun.” The use of simple forms against an abstract ground and the limited color palette together establish the visual coherence of the series as a whole.
