This poster is based on a photograph from one of the performances of the ballet company of the Moscow Children’s Music Theater during a European tour in the mid-1990s. The theater was founded in 1965 by the world’s first female opera director, Natalya Sats, known as “the mother of children’s theaters throughout the world.” She established six theaters for children. In 1979, the theater moved to a new building with its own orchestra, ballet company, designers, and composers. After the fall of Eastern European Communist regimes in 1989, Russian ballet companies, which had been critical to the development of the art in other countries, began to perform again in the West.
