Mistinguett, seen here in Benda’s best-known poster design, was a French actress and singer, who, in her heyday, was the best-paid female actress in the world. Her flamboyant and risqué performances in such celebrated Parisian nightclubs as the Folies Bergere and the Moulin Rouge were evidently very effective. Benda suggests her coquettish and frothy style in his depiction of the flirtatious sidelong glance from under the cloche hat adorned with a butterfly, the swirling skirt of her striped dress, and the feathered kite that appears to pull her along.
