By the mid-1920s, long-distance lines connected every part of the United States. In this simple design, PT&T, like its competitors, encourages existing subscribers to use the telephone by offering such extras as long-distance and message services (these often included scheduled wake-up calls) from their switchboard operators, and reduced rates on evenings and weekends.
