Jossot’s design was produced for one of impresario Charles Baret’s theatrical spectacles at the famous Grand Guignol in Paris, known for its shocking productions featuring realistic horror scenes. The colorful composition, showing an encounter between a lecherous old man and a scantily clad young woman, points to Jossot’s work as a caricaturist both for his own books and for such Paris journals as L’Assiette du Buerre, in which he lampooned the habits of the bourgeoisie.
