This is one of several posters by Ludwig Hohlwein (in this case also printed by Hermann Sonntag of Munich) advertising the popular German travel destination of the Bodensee (Lake Constance), the largest lake in Germany. Bordered by Austria and Switzerland, the area is known for its beautiful views and charming historic towns, of which Konstanz (Constance) is the biggest. Hohlwein’s work became increasingly conventional and even kitsch at times under the Nazi regime; here he shows a Mädchen with blond plaited hair in a traditional costume raising a glass of the celebrated local white wine with the lake and the town of Konstanz and its Münster (cathedral) in the background.
