The American artist and illustrator James Harvey Dulin moved his studio from Chicago to Paris after service in France during World War I. He appears to have designed this poster before his demobilization given that he notes his military title in his signature here. In fact, the Inter-Allied Games advertised in it were intended to boost morale among bitter and dispirited Allied troops awaiting demobilization more than six months after the end of the war on November 11, 1918. The games were held between June 22nd and July 6, 1919, at the specially designed Pershing Stadium outside Paris, named for American General John J. Pershing and funded by the Y. M. C. A. Hundreds of male athletes from Allied nations and their supporters competed in 13 sports as they were watched by more than half a million spectators. With a limited color palette, here Dulin shows a high jumper leaping over a barrier composed of the flags of the Allied nations against a plain yellow ground. The figure dominates the composition, and his physical prowess is further suggested by the fact that he appears to be barely contained by its frame as he vaults toward the viewer.
