This poster is by the little-known American artist John Kemeny, who also produced book illustrations. It advertises electric garden lights to a well-to-do clientele of the kind represented in the image: elegantly dressed and at an evening party in the garden of a grand mansion. (Only about thirty percent of American homes had electric light at this point.) The World War I officer’s uniform of the man in the foreground suggests that it was issued during or shortly after America’s entry into the war in 1917.
