This poster was issued by the Committee of Hygiene and Water, an organization encouraging homeowners to connect to the modern water supply network that had been installed in Paris for about 20 years at the time of publication (full access to the modern sewerage system, however, was only just complete when the poster was published.) Abel Bruyner’s modernist designer connects the idea of running water in the home to a modern way of life. The advantages of such developments cannot be understated: the new public works programs of the early 20th century that brought running water into millions of French homes were also associated with a significant decline in urban mortality.
