This is one of a series of posters designed by Victor Emile Prouvé in the style of a traditional broadside for the Comité National de Prévoyance et d’Économies de Guerre in 1918. This committee was responsible for encouraging civilians to restrict wartime consumption in the interests of their health and of the war effort. Prouvé was among the most influential members of the École de Nancy, perhaps best known for his decorative objects and paintings in the Art Nouveau style. However, he was also a printmaker and the illustration here appears to be based on a wood engraving. It shows a woman serving potatoes to children while an older woman seated at the table, finger raised, seems to lecture them on healthy eating in wartime, the subject of the poster.
