This is a concert poster produced by the Globe Poster Printing Corporation of Baltimore in its familiar style, featuring bold, black lettering set against splashes of Day-Glo ink. It similarly reflects the insistence of Harry Knorr, the firm’s designer for 50 years before his retirement in the late 1970s, that Globe posters should be primarily utilitarian rather than artistic. Globe’s owner, Frank Cicero, stated that “Harry always said you should be able to read a poster in three seconds.” The poster promotes a “thank you” concert by rock band Hootie and the Blowfish during the final weeks of the Wetland Preserve nightclub in Tribeca, New York, soon to be replaced by luxury condos. The club was much beloved and provided an early home for artists like Phish, Dave Matthews Band, Spin Doctors, and Pearl Jam, among many others. It also supported a social and environmental activism center that raised more than $1 million during its twelve-year run.
