This simple design from the mid-1950s promotes fig coffee made by the Austrian Hofer brand. One Andre Hofer had opened a coffee roasting company under his own name in Salzburg, Austria in 1759. By chance, Andreas Hofer, an innkeeper and horse trader with a very similar name, became an Austrian hero in 1809, after leading the Tyrolean rebellion against Napoleon’s invasion. In 1837, the coffeemaker honored the military hero by launching a fig coffee, promoting it with an image of him. Andreas Hofer’s portrait also appeared on the packaging and advertising for the company’s oatmeal.
