Ludwig Hohlwein designed many posters advertising men’s tailoring before World War I; the series of innovative posters he created from 1907 for the Munich company Herman Scherrer, defined variously in these posters as “Breeches-maker,” “sporting-tailor,” and “ladies tailor,” were among those that established his reputation during this period. In this composition in the Sachplakat (object poster) style, Hohlwein integrates simple forms and distinctive lettering in a poster focused on the product being advertised. The man striding forward in his polished boots and tweed hunting jacket, his gun strapped to his back as he carries the geese he has just shot, engages the viewer as he turns his head to look back.
