This poster promotes Doubleday’s 1985 book Happy Birthday, Bach: 300 Years of Johann Sebastian Bach, with text by Peter Schickele and 300 eccentric portraits of the great German composer by Chwast. This brilliant caricature, with sections of a birthday cake forming Bach’s wig as he celebrates with a cigar, was the book’s cover image. Among Chwast’s other portraits in the book was one showing Bach having a drink with Karl Marx and another of him swimming with Mao.
