This composition by Ludwig Hohlwein, like quite a few of those he made during the Nazi era, appears to be based partly on a photographic image, and again asserts a realism that the designer rejected in his earlier work. The poster promotes the historic German pianos made by the Grotrian-Steinweg company, founded by Heinrich Steinweg in Braunschweig in 1835 (he became Henry Steinway after his emigration to New York in 1850, where he founded Steinway & Sons). The image highlights both an old German product and the great German tradition of classical music; the Fraktur script that accompanies it was frequently employed by the regime.
