Paula Scher’s 2007 poster promoting Shakespeare in the Park’s productions of Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream proclaims “Free Love in Central Park.” The composition, without imagery, and based only on red lettering on a hot pink ground, further subverts every one of the traditional expectations surrounding the representation of Shakespeare’s hallowed plays as she attempts to enhance their appeal for a young, urban audience.
