This poster promotes a 1916 war loan to the Russian public. It shows a medieval knight riding to war carrying the Romanov coat of arms. (The same image was appropriated for an American fundraising poster of early 1917 for an American Ambulance Company in Russia.) Tsar Nicholas II abdicated in March 1917 and after this, such Tsarist symbols largely disappeared from posters and other artworks. The Bolsheviks signed a peace treaty with Germany at Brest-Litovsk in March 1918, after which Russian art and graphic design became dominated by social-realist images of sturdy workers and peasants championing the virtues of revolutionary socialism.
