Chwast was one of 24 New York graphic designers commissioned by Neenah Paper to create a poster featuring their idea of a given punctuation mark. The resulting Punc’t poster series, a limited run of 200 silkscreen prints, raised more than $25,000 for the Books for Kids Foundation. In Chwast’s tongue-in-cheek design, evoking the cover of a mass-market romance novel, he suggests the ambivalence of the depicted couple, enclosing in parentheses the engagement ring hovering above their heads. He also transforms the colorful figurations of such conventional book covers into a sophisticated red-and-black design reminiscent of German Expressionist woodcuts of the early 20th century.
