This is one of several posters issued by a banking organization to promote the French government’s fifth loan campaign of 1920, essential to the country’s postwar reconstruction. Like many French posters of this period, it contrasts the ruination of the past with images of a bright future. On the right, Marianne, symbolizing the French Republic, emerges from war-damaged buildings and gazes at the optimistic scene on the horizon: the sun rising over a peasant ploughing and smoking factories. Both are evidence of the agricultural and industrial rebuilding made possible by national loans.
